Karate is a weaponless method of self defense that denotes rank by using Karate Belts in order via color. Karate uses offensive and defensive techniques that incorporates ones body in the most effective way. In Karate, a person must earn a belt by displaying discipline and patience. There are nine Karate Belts that can be earned as shown by the compiled list below.

  1. White. The White belt is the first Karate belt given or earned by a new student of Karate. A white belt indicates that the new student is spending time learning and practicing the basic skills, such as kicks and blocks.
  2. Yellow, Gold, and Orange. Yellow, Gold and Orange Karate belts are given to the beginner student. The student continues to learn the basics and then progresses to more challenging techniques. The light colored belts are given to the beginner students as they build a firm foundation of Karate techniques.
  3. Blue, Green, and Purple. Those students who have one to two years of experience are given blue, green, and purple Karate belts. An advanced Karate student learns to produce force, control their force, and manages the force coming onto their bodies. These moves demand an essential and solid foundation in the basics and involve complex body coordination.
  4. Brown. An intermediate student is a student with two to four years of Martial art experience wears a brown Karate belt. An intermediate student perfects all the beginning moves so it appears to be natural movement. They start to learn more advanced and dangerous moves and are placed into a leadership role where they assist in class with their fellow students.
  5. Black. Black Karate belt students usually have four to six years training and are considered to be advanced students.  All the basic movements in Karate are easily done without hesitation. Black Belts are typically teachers, leaders, administrators and mentors.
