Lacrosse Goalie Tips That Work

Being a captain of defense and being in the most important position in the team, we give you these Lacrosse goalie tips that work in helping you become an ace goalie. Always remember that the strength of a team can be measured by the strength of its goalie which denotes that the future of your team lies significantly in your hands.

  1. Establish the right stance. Knowing how to assume the proper position, popularly referred as the ready position, is one of the most fundamental and the most significant skill every goalie has to learn. This is done by ensuring that the hands are a foot apart and the distance between the feet shall be shoulder wide.  Knees should be bent and arms should be away from the body as well. This position facilitates wider coverage or reach necessary in saving the ball.
  2. Communicate with your teammates well. Hilarious as it may sound but theoretically, the louder the goalie, the better. Effective communication within the team is one of the key factors to win the game and goalies shall certainly be the best communicator among all team members. Some of the key phrases that the goalie shall be familiar of include “clear” (the goalie has the ball), “ball down” (the ball is on the ground) and “check” (check sticks for the coming dangerous pass).
  3. Know where the ball is. Among the team players, goalies shall have the keenest eye to identify the location of the ball in the playing field. Vision is also important in observing the shooter’s eye to intelligently presume where he is going to shoot the ball. They shall also mirror the height of the shooter’s stick, i.e., if the offensive opponent holds the stick high, then the goalie shall hold the stick high as well.
  4. Attack the ball. Goalies shall never be afraid of being hit by the ball. Greater possibilities of saving the ball are at stake when you step towards the incoming shot than wait for the ball to reach you.
  5. Shoot the ball to your team. Successfully saving the ball is absolutely futile and, needless to say, shameful if the goalie has passed it to the opponent’s team. Thus, the goalie shall be focused and equipped with passing skills for the team to have more opportunities to scoring and eventually soaring high.
