In order to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you will need to dedicate a lot of time and effort into training and practicing. Jiu Jitsu is a martial art consisting mostly of grappling and ground techniques, with the ultimate goal of winning by submission. It is considered one of the most effective martial arts, and almost any professional martial artist, such as the MMA fighters, have at least some background training in it. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu masters train for years, even decades, perfecting their grappling stances and submissions.

  1. Find a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teacher in your city or in one nearby. You can search in the yellow pages under martial arts or jiu jitsu. You can also search on the internet, typing your city and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in any web browser. You can call other local martial arts training facilities and ask if they know of a jiu jitsu trainer in town.
  2. Be picky when you choose your jiu jitsu teacher. If you cannot get along with or respect the person who is teaching you Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, then you will not enjoy it and probably will not keep up with it. However, if you find a good teacher, then you will learn quickly and will enjoy what you are learning.
  3. Practice what you learn at least every other day. You will learn new stances such as guard and mount pretty quickly, and you will then learn that each one has its own set of submissions you can use. If you do not keep up with what you are learning then classes will become overwhelming and you probably will no longer enjoy it. Practicing at least every other day will help solidify what you have learned into your memory.
  4. Set goals for yourself and work hard to accomplish them. If you decide to attend jiu jitsu classes once a week every week for 3 months, make sure you follow through. Do not set goals that are unattainable or they will not help you in your training. However, it is proven that by actually setting goals, either by writing them down or just thinking about them, people are much more likely to accomplish those goals.
