When you are building a house or have to replace the roof on an existing structure you may want to know the metal roofing pros and cons. Metal roofing can add a unique look to a building but may require more upfront cost than that of a traditional roof. To find out if a metal roof is right for your situation you will need to compare the pros and cons of a metal roof.

  1. Metal roofs provide many styles too choose from. The most common is the standing seam design, in which there are visible vertical lines on the roof from where the seams slide together. Other styles can include metal roofs that look like asphalt shingle, clay tiles, and slate. Metal roofs are nearly maintenance free and provide a unique look to a building. Metal roofs are available in a variety of metals such as steel, stainless steel, cooper, and aluminum. Each proving a unique look to the roof. Metal roofs are fire retardant and they can be energy efficient in hot climate areas. Metal roofs can be eligible for a tax rebate. They are also fully recyclable, eliminating more waste in a local dump. Metal roofs are light weight and can be installed over existing roofing materials.
  2. There are cons to metal roofs. The upfront cost can be substantial compared to that of an asphalt shingle roof, possibly between two to four times as much depending on the material used for the metal roof. It has to be installed by professionals for the best outcome. Professional installation will also guarantee the roof. Not every home will look good with the standard metal roof.
