Motocross training for beginners is serious business. As a beginner in motocross you should already know who to ride. This article is for riders who want to transition to motocross, not an article on how to ride a motorcycle. Riding is fundamentally the same, what changes is the environment and tactics. As a beginner on a motocross bike you will need to train in specific areas to build a motocross foundation. Training for the beginner motocross rider is more about off the track then on, keep that in mind.

What you will need:

  • Motocross bike
  • Motocross gear
  • Place to ride, preferably a motocross track
  1. Training for motocross as a beginner means getting your body in motocross shape. Before hitting the track you need to ensure your muscles are prepared for the beating motocross can dish out. First up is weight training. You will want to work your entire core muscle groups at least three times a week. Be sure to work no less than three sets at ten repetitions. Employ such weight training as squats, leg curls and extension, bicep curs, triceps extensions, bench press and lat pulls.
  2. Next are of training is off the motocross bike as well. That is endurance training. Do not under estimate the need for a solid three day a week cardio workout. This regiment should be hardcore. You want to mix in running for endurance, jumping rope for agility and swimming for a full body workout and endurance. Motocross is a strenuous ride and will take allot out of you, endurance training is vital for success. Mix in some stretching as well for the legs and back especially.
  3. Motocross track training comes in two phases, riding and managing the track. The riding training consists of hitting the track in full gear. As a beginner you will want to tackle the track slowly and in pieces. Your first run should actually be a walk around the track. You want to see the track, the turns, bumps, jumps and dips. See the corners and the embankment to help you visualize the run when you are on your motocross bike. Your first several runs on the motocross bike should be taken as a slow deliberate ride.
  4. Next, training to manage the track means that you take the track on in laps with increasing speed. Only go as fast as you are comfortable with and this may take several visits. The main goal is to learn to handle the bike and manage the track as it plays on you as a physical and mental rider. As a beginner motocross rider once you have passed this stage you are ready for intermediate training and well on your way to taking your training wheels off.
