The murder capital of the United States varies each year. New crime statistics, new policing methods, and changes in the city itself can affect what is reported. Plus, there are always the murders that aren’t reported. The murder capital of the United States has also been decided by Mother Nature in the past. New Orleans’ crime rates topped every report after Katrina. Even all these years later, New Orleans, Louisiana still holds one of the top spots as one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. To put things in perspective, Los Angeles, with all of its gangs, drugs, and money, didn’t make it into the top five and rarely made it into the top ten.
New Orleans – New Orleans was named the murder capital of the United States in 2008 and has been consistently ranked in the top ten for several years. Its overall crime rate has gone down in past years but not enough to take it out of the top three.
Chicago – Chicago bumped New Orleans from the number one spot in 2010. It’s well known that Chicago suffers from huge gang problems and the city is still famous for being the home of Al Capone. It hasn’t quite managed to shake the reputation as the home of the mob.
St. Louis – St. Louis has been a staple on many high crime lists. It’s one of the murder capitals of the United States. There have been a few past years when St. Louis has managed to knock New Orleans out of the top spot. St. Louis is plagued by gangs and high property damage rates. It has a higher violent crime rate than the whole state of Missouri.
Detroit – Detroit’s crime rate has risen in the past couple of years, and it has recently become one of the murder capitals of the United States. It has an incredibly high rape and assault rate.
