Non Shedding Dogs

Believe it or not, there are non-shedding dogs that can make your life much simpler and pleasant. Non-shedding is a term that means very little and, in some cases, no fur sheds and little or no dander is released from the undercoat (if they have one). The great thing about these dog breeds is breeders can make them hypoallergenic for those people who love pets but suffer from allergies. Study a few of these breeds and determine which dog could be a life-long companion for you. Check nearby shelters for non-shedding dogs that need good homes and loving families.

  1. Bichon Frise This adorable toy breed has thick wavy hair with no undercoat. They are hypoallergenic and get along well with other animals. They are known to have few inherent health issues. These dogs weigh in at six to nineteen pounds; they are also sharp watch dogs and will alert you about dangers or strangers nearby your home with their keen senses.
  2. Maltese These adorable little toy dogs are generally only three to ten pounds and somewhat fragile. It's great to have several of these tiny clouds of love because they are non-shedding and hypoallergenic. Plan on paying for a high-maintenance program for them because they can easily become matted and the area around the eyes should be cleaned daily to prevent staining. They are unaware of their size limitations and should be protected from larger animals that they may become aggressive with them (in some cases).
  3. Yorkshire Terrier These little toy bundles of joy are virtually hypoallergenic and do not shed fur. They love cuddles and will go everywhere with you. They are mild-mannered, sensitive and a good watch dog that has a pretty loud bark to alert you.
  4. Poodles All types of poodles are a joy to be around because the toy, miniature and standard versions of the breed are non-shedding. The toy and miniature poodles are well-suited for families with children because they are sweet and protective. They tend to get along well with everyone if they're socialized and do not attach themselves to only one member of the family.
  5. Lhasa Apso These dogs are non-shedding dogs but are very high maintenance. Plan on keeping this cute little one well-groomed and manicured to prevent matting; attention to their ears, nails and paws are vital. They are no more than eleven inches in height at the shoulders and are keen watch dogs. Apartment life would work out well for them.

If you are allergic to dander and are not sure about a certain breed or mix you are considering adopting, take a tolerance test before making a lifetime commitment.
