As a new soccer fan you might be wondering what offsides in soccer is and what the rules states. Soccer is one of the world's largest sports as countries all over the world play it everyday. Do not be frustrated over not knowing the offsides rule in soccer, as even fans and players that have played soccer their whole lives debate over the rule and when it is enforced. Offsides is one the more trickier rules in sports and is hard to judge. Any avid soccer fan will eventually learn the rule once taught and viewed a few times as it occurs.

What does the rule do? When the rule is enforced the referee blows and whistles and the game is stopped. The team that committed the offsides violation will forfeit possession and the other team will get to throw in the ball. The referee signals an offside by raising his flag out in front of him at a 45 degree angle.

The offsides rule. Offsides is a rule in soccer that is enforced when a player is in the "offside" position and the ball is played or passed to that player. A player is in this position when his team has the ball and he is on the opposing team's side of the field and is also closer to the goal than an opposing defender and ball. When in this position, the offensive player cannot be the first to touch the ball when it is kicked to him or play is stopped and a turnover occurs.
