If you are experiencing pain in your lower left abdomen, it is important to seek medical attention if it is severe or does not go away. There are a number of possible causes. Some of the maladies that can cause pain in the lower left abdomen are nothing to worry about, while others can be quite serious. While many people describe pain in the abdomen as a "stomachache," the pain is probably not coming from your stomach if you are experiencing it in your lower left abdomen. Among the possible maladies that can cause pain in the lower left abdomen:
Appendicitis. Although the appendix is located on the right side of the abdomen, it is not uncommon to feel pain in the lower left abdomen, as well. Appendicitis does not get better on its own. If you suspect you have appendicitis, seek medical help immediately.
Pulled muscles or other injuries. If you have strained or pulled a muscle in your abdomen, you may feel pain in your lower left abdominal area. You can help a pulled muscle heal by getting plenty of rest, and taking an over the counter pain killer such as Ibuprofen.
Crohn's Disease. This disease causes inflammation in the digestive tract. It is not uncommon to experience pain in the lower left abdomen during a Crohn's flare up.
Inguinal hernia. A hernia is a tear in the abdominal wall. Some people are born with them. In other cases, they are the result of strain or injury. If you suspect you have a hernia, you should talk to your doctor about options to have it repaired.
Kidney Infection. One of the symptoms of a kidney infection is pain in the right or left lower abdomen. Kidney infections are serious, and need to be treated with antibiotics prescribed by a physician.
