Pain Under Left Rib Cage

You can experience pain under left rib cage for a number of different reasons. As always, any pain that is severe or does not go away quickly is a reason to go to the doctor and not a time to be looking up your symptoms on the internet. If you are just curious about what might cause pain under the left rib cage, however, read on to learn a little about possible causes.

Gastritis, which is an inflammation of the lining of the stomach, is one possible cause of pain under the rib cage. It is often felt on the left hand side. Gastritis is typically caused by a bacterial infection. It can also be caused by medications or drinking too much alcohol.

Pain under the left rib cage can also be caused by angina. Angina is characterized by chest pain that is caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. The pain is described as heaviness, tightness or pressure. It is a symptom of coronary artery disease.

Pneumonia is another cause of pain under the rib cage. This is an inflammation of the lungs that is sometimes a secondary infection after a cold or respiratory infection. Pneumonia that is caused by a bacteria infection can be treated with antibiotics.

Severe pain under the left rib cage can also be a symptom of a heart attack. Heart attacks are caused by blood clots blocking the flow of blood to the heart. The pain is described as an extreme crushing pain that radiates down the arm.

Cancer can also cause pain under the left rib cage. The pain can feel like indigestion, or like a fullness or pressure. Other symptoms include having trouble swallowing, fatigue and unexpected weight loss.
