Learning how to play Mario Kart online will allow you to enjoy the game long after your friends get sick of it and refuse to play with you in person. Mario Kart, the weapon-based kart driving game by Nintendo, has been tons of fun for every console its been on. Unfortunately, many of the Mario Kart games did not have online play. Thankfully, the last two Mario Kart games, Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS and Mario Kart Wii for the Nintendo Wii, both have fantastic online modes. Playing Mario Kart online for either system is very simple set up.
To play Mario Kart online, you will need:
- Either Mario Kart DS or Mario Kart Wii
- A wireless router
- Mario Kart Wii. Mario Kart Wii is the best choice for online play. The Online options are far more robust and allow for more players than the DS game. To play Mario Kart Wii online, you will need to set up Wiiconnect24. This can be done by going to the option menu on the main Wii menu. From here, go to the Wiiconnect24 bar. It will ask you for your basic wireless router information, such as wireless ID and security password. Once this is entered, make sure to test the connection. Now, go into the game itself and choose the Nintendo WiFi mode. The game will use the Wiiconnect24 information you set up earlier to connect to the internet. From here, you can play either race or battle modes with people all over the world. You can even have a friend playing with you in person.
- Mario Kart DS. Mario Kart DS has a very similar set up to Mario Kart Wii. Start up the game and go to the multiplayer mode. There will be an option to set up your wireless connection. The game will ask for the same information the Wii game does: wireless ID, security password, etc. Once these are all in and the connection is tested, simply click on the online mulitplayer option. Mario Kart DS only features races in multiplayer, but its still playing Mario Kart online. If you have the option, play Mario Kart online on the Wii. It has far more options.
