Playing Second Base In Baseball

Playing second base in baseball may take some time to get used to for some people. However, second base is not typically a difficult position to learn, taking into account its responsibilities. Take the following considerations into account to learn how to play second base more effectively.

  1. Understand your responsibilities. Playing second base in baseball requires an understanding of your responsibilities. The primary responsibility is in covering second base when the ball is on the other side of the infield.  On a ball hit to the outfield on your half of the field, you may need to serve as the cut off man to get the ball back in the infield. Other responsibilities exist, such as covering first base when the first baseman is playing in on a bunt. Develop the awareness of these responsibilities on the field.
  2. Be ready.  Do you know how many outs there are?  Are you aware of the speed of the man on first just in case you bobble the ball for the double play?  Understanding the game converts into an understanding of situations that will help you make the right decisions on the field.
  3. Understand your role offensively and defensively. You need to know how you play as a teammate on both sides of the field. At second base you may be a leader or an offensive or defensive specialist. Take these roles and work on your strengths and weaknesses. Being a good second baseman also has responsibilities offensively. For instance, if you are a leadoff man, you should work on contact hitting and base running skills.
