With various pommel horse training tips you can help your gymnast increase both his ability and strength. In order to train a gymnast successfully on the pommel horse you will need to be sure he is both skilled and accomplished at including the drills and routines of the pommel horse.

  1. Practice Daily Routines. Doing daily routines will help your gymnast to improve both his coordination and strength. Watch the gymnast carefully in order to recognize any groups of muscles that will need additional work along with spotting any bad form that needs correction.
  2. Increase Strength of the Wrist and Upper Body. Convey how important wrist strength is to your gymnast. Lack of strong wrists or upper body strength will make routines on the pommel horse almost impossible.  Weak upper body strength will make it hard for the gymnast to complete any advanced routines on the pommel horse. By increasing weight room workouts with your gymnast not only will you increase his wrist strength but also his upper body strength. To do this you will need to work the back, biceps, shoulders and triceps of the gymnast.
  3. Build Up Endurance. In order to accomplish advanced routines on the pommel horse, your gymnast will need to have a high level of endurance. This can be accomplished both by increasing weight workouts so that the work out is changeling but of course safe. Increased endurance can also be practiced directly on the pommel horse. During practice have your gymnast stop and then hold his position at certain parts of the routine. Start with holding the position for 30 seconds and increase this time as the endurance of the gymnast grows.
