Qucik Intro: Field Hockey Rules
Looking for a quick introduction to the game of field hockey? A typical game of field hockey consists of two halves that last approximately 25 minutes long, with a 5 minute break in between. Each field hockey tram is permitted to have 11 players on the field, including the goalie. The players must use the flat side of their field hockey stick to dribble or pass the ball down the field. Around each goalie net, there is a scoring circle. In order for a team to be awarded a goal, a player of the opposing team must shoot the ball past the goalie into the field hockey net.
Like any other sport, field hockey has fouls. Field hockey players are not permitted to use the round side of the field hockey stick to dribble or pass the ball. Players are not allowed to trip, hit, charge, or shove the opposing players. The field hockey stick must remain below the waist line at all times. Field hockey players may only use their stick to move the ball. If the field hockey ball is launched into the air, the players must wait for the ball to hit the ground on its own. The use of hands or other body parts is not permitted.
If fouls are committed, the ball will be awarded to the opposing team, or a penalty corner will be issued. For a penalty corner, the field hockey ball will be placed on the goal line. A player will shoot the ball to another teammate. The teammate is not permitted to be within the scoring circle when receiving the ball. Before the player attempts to shoot the ball into the field hockey net, all teammates of that player must be outside of the scoring circle.
