Quick Intro: What Is Belaying?
You finally want to find out exactly what is belaying? If you are a rock climber then you should be familiar with the term "belaying." If not, then belaying is a rock climbing term that relates to securing a rope to a steady object to prevent falling too far. Belaying could be used as a safety or a skill technique.
Belay actually originated from sailors. The sailors used to secure a rope on a ship to prevent dangers when visiting the sea. If someone were to dive, then they could return back to the ship safely by being pulled up by a passenger boarding the ship. It is used the same way in rock climbing except it refers to the safety of climbing and no one pulls a person up. The person is spared from falling all the way to the bottom of a terrain.
In the act of belaying, the belayer will first, take a rope and secure it to a steady, stable object. Then, they would secure the rope around their waist. They may walk a distance or apply steady friction to the rope from end to end. That will ensure that the rope is secure and that the object is supporting the rope and that the rope is supporting the belayer.
Some belayers may have some help around to test the procedure. There are devices available to test the friction that is available between the rope, person, and the object. It is always safe to test before a climber actually climbs. They need to ensure that if they really were to fall, then they would be safe.
