Get the naked truth on the Red Light District in Amsterdam. One of the Netherlands’ most popular tourist areas—known by locals as the Rossebuurt—it is also one of the oldest parts of the city, rich with beautiful architecture.

Amsterdam’s Red Light District is mostly known for its many sex shops, brothels and other adult entertainment, conjuring images of red-fringed window parlors with women offering up their wares. So it really goes without saying that Amsterdam is celebrated for having an open-minded attitude that welcomes nearly ever lifestyle choice you can think of.

For those who want to delve a little deeper into the Red Light District (pun intented), it offers wonderful accommodations, restaurants and musical entertainment. During the summer months, the area is alive with music. It is also home to one of Europe’s first Mexican food restaurants, Café Pacifico.

Despite what many people might think, the Red Light District Amsterdam is not a law-free zone. There are many things you should not do or be sure to avoid. Do not take pictures of any of the occupied windows. You might think you are being slick by using your cellphone camera but you’re not. When you are caught, you could be asked to leave and even have your camera taken. You should be on the lookout for pick-pockets in the area. A good way to avoid such crime is to go in a large group. Never buy anything from street dealers. Many things are legal in Amsterdam but only in specific locations; don’t try to save money by buying things off the street.

Remember to pack an open mind when visiting the Amsterdam's Red Light District. This is not an attraction to judge other people at, but a place where you can be free to explore your hidden desires.
