The Washington Redskins began play in the NFL in 1937, and the list of Redskins coaches throughout history is impressive. There are some Redskins coaches that many people may not have expected to see on this list, while others were very famous for their roles with the Washington football club. Here is the list of the more famous and important Redskins coaches of all time.

  1. Ray Flaherty (1936-1942). Ray Flaherty makes the list of significant Redskins coaches because he was the first head coach in the history of the Redskins franchise. He actually started his career with the Redskins franchise when it was the Boston Redskins in 1936. Flaherty led the Redskins to NFL championships in 1937 and 1942. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1976 and passed away in 1994.
  2. Joe Kuharich (1954-1958). Joe Kuharich is remembered as the coach that succeeded the legendary "Curly" Lambeau in the line of Redskins coaches. After almost a decade of losing records, Kuharich finally brought some success to Washington when he coached the team to a winning record in 1955. He won "Coach of the Year" honors for that season, but could not capitalize on his success. But, he remains one of the few Redskins coaches to have a winning season in the 1940's and 1950's.
  3. Vince Lombardi (1969). The legendary head coach of the Green Bay Packers suddenly announced his retirement from coaching in 1967, citing health concerns. But he could not stay away from coaching for very long, and in 1969, he became the head coach of the Washington Redskins. In one season, Lombardi turned the Redskins from a losing franchise into a group of winners. But his success was cut short when he contracted cancer and passed away in 1970.
  4. George Allen (1971-1977). George Allen was one of the Redskins coaches remembered primarily for his regular season success. In his time with the Redskins, he never coached his team to Super Bowl victory and his Redskins post-season record was 2-5. But his Washington Redskins teams only missed the playoffs twice in his seven-year career in Washington.
  5. Joe Gibbs (1981-1992 / 2004-2007). Joe Gibbs was an innovator of the game of football and arguably the best coach in the history of Washington Redskins coaches. He won three Super Bowl titles with three different quarterbacks in his time in Washington. In his career, the Washington Redskins was his only head coaching job.
