Escargots are eaten with a small narrow fork which is used to separate the flesh from the shell. They are usually served with a butter, garlic and herb mixture. Escargot is a very popular dish in France, but it is also known as a great appetizer all over the world.   1. La Rose Bistro is located at 2037 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley in the downtown area.  For the dinner appetizer, Escargot de Bourgogne is served in the shell stuffed with garlic and butter. The restaurant opens at 5pm during the days Tuesday through Sunday for dinner, wine and beer. Happy hour is from 5pm to 6pm Tuesday through Saturday. During happy hour, most wines are ½ off by the glass.
  4. La Bateau Ivre is situated at 2629 Telegraph Avenue at the corner of Carleton and Telegraph. This is a coffeehouse bar restaurant. They even have free WiFi! On their menu, Escargots Sautés Au Pernod is served with ½ dozen snails sautéed in butter, garlic, herbs and flambéed with Pernod. Pernod is a liqueur flavored with anise. There is indoor and outdoor dining. Also available is a room for banquets and meetings. Reservations can be made from eight to fifty people by calling 510-849-1100. Dinner hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 5pm to 9:30pm and on Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 10:30pm.
