Sam Walton Biography

You may not be familiar with the biography of Sam Walton, but you are more than likely very familiar with Wal-Mart. Surely you have been to Wal-Mart at least once in your life. Sam Walton is the founder of Wal-Mart, one of the largest and most well-known retailers in the world. This was not his only accomplishment though. Learning more about this great businessman will surely impress your friends.

Sam Walton was born in 1918 on a farm in Oklahoma. In 1923, Walton and his family moved to Missouri so his father could take up a new job as a loan appraiser. The Great Depression was occurring as Sam Walton grew up, so he decided to take on many jobs to help support his family. These jobs included milking cows, delivering milk, and delivering newspapers. He also had his first taste of the retail business by working in a store his father owned. In high school, Walton excelled in athletics as well as academics. This led him to become vice president of his class.

Walton went on to attend college at the University of Missouri and majored in economics. He didn't take a break from working while he was in college. He held multiple jobs such as waiting tables. Like in high school, Sam Walton excelled academically in college, perusing a major in economics. After graduating from school, Sam Walton joined the military and worked for retailer JcPenney. In 1940, he began his own retail career by opening the Ben Franklin five-and-dime franchises in Arkansas.

Sam Walton opened the first Wal-Mart Discount City in Roger, Arkansas, in 1962. Part of the reason his stores became a major success was because of his ability to keep prices lower than his competitors and his decision to keep his stores open for longer hours. In 1991, Wal- Mart became the world's largest retailer. Sam Walton also founded Sam's Wholesale Club in 1983.

Sam Walton was a remarkable man. His legacy lives on throughout  his accomplishments in retail Many business people aspire to be like him and still use his philosophies.
