Sea Kayaking Touring: How To

By: Greg Johnson

Are you curious about sea kayaking and touring and how to get involved in this fun adventure? If you have ever thought of going touring on the sea, you might be thinking about a cruise. This, for most of us, is the smallest boat we really want to be on. But some prefer things a bit wilder, such as tucking themselves into a kayak. If you are that type of person, you may be wondering how to get started on a sea tour in a kayak. One of the best places to start would probably be your local outdoor store, which offers just about everything that is needed for heading out into the wilderness or onto the water. There may even be tours in your area, if you live near the coast.

  1. You’ll definitely want to find someone who is a professional for this kind of touring. It’s not like hopping in a small boat and heading out onto the lake. Being prepared is important, and a good guide can help you prepare. How long will you want to tour, and what is the weather going to be like?
  2. These basics are to make sure you can take everything you need and have it in easy reach. Taking supplies and placing them in colored bags can help with that. Safety gear, first-aid kits, clothing and those things you may need for repairing the kayak or even your own gear are crucial.
  3. Some places for kayak touring include British Columbia, Thailand, Maine, the San Juan Islands, Belize, Michigan and even Louisiana. There are many places to find tours and instructors, plus books on touring and what to do, how to get ready for a sea kayak tour and what to be aware of on the water. It can be dangerous, but it can also be a beautiful experience, especially if you are out for whale watching and want to be up close and personal (although not too close) with those magnificent animals. Alaska is a great option, which makes sense considering how beautiful Glacier Bay can be, when you are able to take the time to see it. Some of us still prefer the cruise of the inside passage, but if kayaking is the way to go in order to have a different and mind-expanding experience, we may try that too.
