Seasonal Allergy Relief: 10 Tips

Seasonal allergies can be annoying, but with these 10 tips for seasonal allergy relief, you can lessen their effects. Seasonal allergies occur because the body reacts to an allergen that is present for one of the seasons of the year. Common seasonal allergies include pollen and mold. The effects of seasonal allergies range from itchy, watery eyes, to a stuffy nose, to a sore throat, to asthma, for some people. Use these ten tips for seasonal allergy relief to feel better.

  1. Identify your allergy triggers. This is probably the most important step in combating seasonal allergies. When you know what triggers them, you can take steps to avoid the allergen or lessen your exposure to it. The best way to do this is to see an allergist and get an allergy test.
  2. Take over-the-counter allergy medications. There are a number of effective over-the-counter allergy medications that can provide relief from seasonal allergies. These include antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays. A doctor can help you pick a medication that's right for you and your seasonal allergy symptoms.
  3. Close your windows. In the height of pollen season, it might be tempting to sleep with the windows open, because most pollen hits in the springtime. Closing up the windows, especially at night, can provide some relief from seasonal allergies.
  4. Wash your hands frequently, and shower after being outside. Pollen can stick to your hands and your body when you've been outside. If pollen is on your hands and you rub your face or eyes, you can set off an allergic reaction.
  5. Get into the AC. One way to help lesson the effects of seasonal allergies is to get into air conditioning, and use it in your house, and especially your bedroom. Air conditioning filters out pollen and mold. It's best to use an air conditioning system with a HEPA filter, which stands for "high efficiency particulate air."
  6. Don't forget that pets can carry allergens, too. If you have a furry friend in your life, keep in mind that he or she will carry pollen and mold and can contribute to your seasonal allergy symptoms. To get relief, make sure to wash your pets frequently and keep them out of your bedroom and off your furniture.
  7. Wear sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses can help keep pollen and mold out of your eyes when you're outside, and can help you keep your seasonal allergies at bay.
  8. Dry your clothes in an automatic clothing dryer. It may be tempting to hang your wash out to dry, especially in the spring and summer, but if you suffer from seasonal allergies, it's best to dry them in an automatic dryer. If you hang them outside, pollen and mold can cling to the clothing and rev up your allergies.
  9. Wear a mask when you're outside. To get relief from your seasonal allergies, wear a mask. You can buy a cheap painter's mask from a home improvement store. Wear it when you're outside to keep allergens out of your nose and mouth.
  10. See your doctor and have him or her prescribe medication. If you're really struggling with your seasonal allergies and nothing is providing enough relief, or if you're experiencing asthma or other breathing issues, you should see your doctor. He or she can prescribe something stronger than an over-the-counter medication to provide you with some relief.
