With modern technological advances, especially in website programming, learning to send a text message online is simpler than it sounds. With a few easy steps, you can text anyone's phone straight from your computer for free. Sending a text online is now one of the easiest ways to get a hold of someone without having to pay a cent.

To send a text message online, you'll need:

  • An email account at mail.google.com
  • Someone's cell phone number
  1. Go to your Google Email account. Create a Google Email account online, or simply log in if you already have one.
  2. Locate the Chat function. To send a text online, you're basically sending an instant message to a phone number. The Chat function is on Google Email's left hand column.
  3. Put in the cell phone number. Put in the phone number you want to send a text to in the box that says "Search, add, or invite" in the Chat function. Use only numbers. Leave out punctuation.
  4. Add the phone number as a contact. Google will prompt you to give a contact name for the phone number. Fill out the necessary information, and then click "Save."
  5. Send an instant message. A small instant message box will appear in the bottom right-hand corner of your Google Email account page. Type your online text message into the box and then hit the Enter key.
  6. Have a conversation. Wait for the person to reply to the text you sent online, and then continue the conversation like any other online instant messaging. You're already sending texts online, and for free!

One tip to keep in mind is that Google limits your text messages to 44 a day, so make sure to keep your conversations concise. Otherwise, enjoy your new, free way to send a text message online with ease.
