Shooting Games To Play Free

In the past several years there has been a trend among software developers to offer shooting games to play free for PC computers. Most of these games are of the MMOFPS variety (Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter) and follow a play-for-free system that usually incorporates you being able to play the basic game for free while offering upgraded weapons and perks for money (usually in the form of “gold” in the game). This seems to be the future for PC games as most developers now concentrate their efforts on console-based games. However, these play-for-free shooters have some high-quality selections to choose from where you can have an enjoyable PC gaming experience. Here are the absolute best of the current crop of play-for-free shooter games available.

  1. Alliance of Valiant Arms (known as AVA) – This South Korean-developed game has been around for a few years now but still the king of free shooters due to it being constantly updated. AVA is based on a fictional war between the EU faction (European Union) and the NRF faction (Neo-Russian Federation). It is an online first person shooter (FPS) that offers up tons of amazing game modes, near-limitless customization, and some of the best shooting gameplay to be found online. It’s very good looking game and quite stable thanks to the Unreal Engine powering it, and runs nearly lag-free. If you play only one free shooter this year, make it this one.
  2. Battlefield Heroes – This is an enjoyable third person shooter game developed by the people who have created all the great “Battlefield” series of games. It's a fun cartoon-style shooter which can be enjoyed by players of all ages and skill levels. It’s easy to pick up and play and has some deep character development. You can pay for “gold” to buy upgraded weapons, traditional and more whimsical outfits, and other gadgets that help boost your health and ability to gain experience points (XP). But, if you choose, you don’t have to pay to play at all and can just rely on ranking-up to get experience and get new weapons, etc. The hook in most of these play-for-free games is that once you see other players carrying more powerful weapons and cool customizations, you'll be very tempted to spend some of your own money to do the same. It usually works, too.
  3. Combat Arms – Combat Arms is another free-to-play modern first-person shooter developed in South Korea. Its style of gameplay is similar to well-known commercial games such as Call of Duty, Ghost Recon 2 and the venerable Counter-Strike series. Combat Arms offers a lot of content and is just flat-out fun to play. There’s lots of customizing available for your equipment, though equipment comes with the somewhat annoying limitation that it is timed and does not last forever. This same format is used in Battlefield Heroes and other play-for-free games.
