Should I Stretch Before Or After Running?

If you are looking to get fit or lose weight by running, you will first need the answer to the question, "should I stretch before or after running?" It may seem like stretching before a workout will help get muscles "ready" for the exercise, but in reality muscles should be warmed up before you stretch them, meaning that you should stretch after running. Read on to find out how to properly stretch and take care of yourself when starting a new running routine.

What you will need to start:

  • Proper running shoes
  • Workout clothes
  • A safe place to run and stretch
  • Flat and even terrain to run on
  • Your doctor's authorization to start a workout routine
  1. Be sure to stretch warm muscles. You should not stretch your muscles before running because your muscles will not be properly warmed up. Instead, stretch after running or jogging.
  2. Use proper stretching techniques. Instead of stretching for a few seconds after running "just because," stretch your muscles well. Hold each stretch for fifteen to twenty seconds and repeat each one five times. Be sure to relax and enjoy the stretch rather than push yourself.
  3. Try walking as a warm up. You can get your body started by walking a few blocks before you start running. Just be sure to stretch your muscles after your run.
  4. Do not overtrain. Overtraining is when you run more than your body can take, which can lead to injury. You should start a workout routine slowly: if you can't talk while you run, you are running too fast. Be sure to drink plenty of water, and see a doctor if you feel unusual pain.
  5. Replace your shoes. Running until your shoes wear down can lead to injury. Even a good pair can last at most 500 miles. Instead, buy specialty shoes and alternate between different pairs if you plan to run a lot.
