At your next Easter dinner, try one of these fun and appetizing side dishes for Easter ham.  Easter dinner traditionally features ham as the main course but it’s the side dishes that make the meal a success.  Whether you choose healthy or decadent, creamy or hearty, you can’t go wrong with these side dish options for your Easter ham.

  1. Delicious and comforting, garlic mashed potatoes are great for celebrating Easter.  What doesn’t go well with garlic?  Garlic mashed potatoes make a nice side dish for ham.  Most recipes for garlic mashed potatoes include sour cream which enhances the flavor and gives the potatoes a nice creamy texture.  For a little fun, try making this dish with cream cheese.

  2. Rice pilaf with asparagus or other spring vegetables.  Rice pilaf is a great side dish for special occasions like Easter and pairs well with ham.  Try a rice pilaf recipe that includes barley to add fiber to your meal.  Enhance the dish by adding spring vegetables like asparagus or fresh peas.

  3. Asparagus is a great accompaniment to Easter ham.  Asparagus is a versatile side dish that works well with ham.  Several options are available for cooking asparagus.  Try roasting asparagus with a little olive oil and parmesan cheese.  Another easy method for cooking asparagus is to grill it with lemon and garlic.

  4. Glazed carrots.  This side dish is definitely traditional but it adds color to the Easter table.  Combine a tablespoon of honey with lemon juice and butter to make a nice glaze.  Add in the carrots, stir until warm, and serve.

  5. Scalloped potatoes are a great alternative to mashed potatoes.  Creamy, cheesy scalloped potatoes are comforting and enjoyable.  This side dish won’t win any health awards but it does go great with ham.

  6. Green beans with toasted nuts.  For a simple and healthy dish, especially if you’re also having scalloped potatoes, try some green beans.  Toast some almonds or hazelnuts and sprinkle over cooked green beans just before serving.
