Learning how to detune an effective edge on a snowboard may seem a little strange at first. Detuning an effective edge on a snowboard means reducing the effectiveness where it isn’t needed. Detuning a snowboard occurs at the heel and toe of the snowboard. Learning the proper technique to detune an effective edge on a snowboard is a routine process. Detuning an effective edge on a snowboard can be done at home. The method for detuning an effective edge on a snowboard is straightforward and easy to understand. See below for the process to detune an effective edge on a snowboard.

Snowboarding is an awesome sport and detuning an effective edge can give you an advantage. The purpose is to reduce the cut and drive of the nose and tail of the board. This is because you do not turn on your heel or toe of the board but you do on the sides.

Things you will need to get this done:

  • File
  • Towels (2)
  • Clamps
  • Safety glasses

How to detune an effective edge on a snowboard:

  1. Set the snowboard down on a flat surface. If bindings are attached, then place it deck side up, otherwise it really doesn’t matter. Place the towel over the point at which you will clamp down the snowboard. If you do not want to clamp the snowboard, you can secure it with your hand. Be sure to leave it hanging off the end of the flat surface.
  2. Put on your safety glasses. Use the file and file downward in a rounding motion. Do this across the entire heel or toe of the snowboard. You are rounding the sharp edge of the snowboard around these areas. Filing should occur around the entire area until it straightens out to the edge of the snowboard. Repeat on opposite side. Use the second towel to wipe down the filed areas.
