Sores On Tongue Causes

Sores on tongue causes can vary, and can be a rather irritating condition for those who suffer from it. The tongue is a sensitive part of the body and because it is used numerous times throughout the day, any type of sore or discomfort to the tongue can be very bothersome.

1. Oral herpes virus. Also referred to as "herpetic stomatitis", herpes affecting the tongue and mouth can cause irritating sores and discomfort. Oral herpes is caused by a virus, and often causes painful sores to develop on the lips, tongue, and inside of the mouth. In certain cases, oral herpes can cause fever and body pain as well. 
2. Yeast infection. Certain fungal yeast infections of the mouth can cause irritated sores in the mouth and tongue areas. Yeast infections in the mouth are also sometimes referred to as "oral thrush". A yeast infection is more likely to occur in babies, those who wear dentures, and those with a weakened immune system. 
3. Bacterial Strep infection. Streptococcal infections have been known to cause sores and other uncomfortable issues in the mouth and surrounding areas. Strep infections can start out in the mouth and may also travel the throat and skin. 
4. Injury or damage to the tongue. Sometimes just simply having a jagged tooth, poorly fitting dentures, spicy foods, burns to the tongue, or other forms of irritation and trauma to the mouth can cause sores to develop on the tongue. The tongue is a very sensitive part of the mouth, and it can become irritated easily just by small issues such as these. 
5. Canker sores. Sores on the tongue are often caused by canker sores with are simply small ulcers in the mouth and on the tongue. Canker sores are one of the most common causes of sores on the tongue and near the mouth. There are various different topical ointments that can be used to ease the discomfort of canker sores.
