Are you thinking about starting a food service business? Well, starting a food service business requires employing some business strategies. You first need to find an under-served market area because this will ensure a better success rate. Find out what type of business license you need to run your business. Most county and city requires a food handler’s card from your local health department. Do these things first then start the other procedures listed.

  • Food handlers card
  • Money
  • Business License
  1. Find out what type of food service business you want to start. This is important because the food service area has a wide range of choices such as bakery, mobile food, catering company as well as restaurant.  After you identify the business type, check out competitors during their busy hours and make sure there is a demand for the business you are starting.
  2. Try to find a unique niche to go with the undeserved area you selected. For example, the area you are looking at have several donut stores. However, they do not sell muffins. Thus, you can sell donuts, muffin, coffee and tea.  Doing this will not guarantee that your business will be successful, but it will make it easier.
  3. Search for a food business location. Now that you have selected your target market, choose the business location. Make sure the business location is close to your target customers.
  4. Contact your local state agency and request a business license. Normally, you can obtain a business license from city hall. It might be a good idea to call them first or visit their website to find out the cost and requirements before you drive to their location.
  5. Obtain your food handlers permit.  Your local health department normally issue food handlers permit. Give them a call and find out the cost and requirements, or visit their website to find the information you need.
  6. Buy food service business equipment. Do this only after you have secured all the required licenses. You do not want to open a business if you do not have the state and county requirements taken care of. Since you are starting a new food service business, you might want to buy your equipment at discount suppliers or buy use equipment to reduce cost.

Tips/Warning: When you open a new business, you may not make a profit right away. You should have sufficient money to take of your living expense for at least six months. Also, prepare to work long hours if you want your food service business to be successful.

The steps outlined are the best way to start your food service business. Thus, with hard work, self confidence and time, you will achieve the success you desire.
