Even though striped bass are not easy to catch with a fly, these striped bass fly fishing tips will help make you more successful. These fish are smart and stealthy so you need to be on top of your game, but you can catch them. Keep in mind that they will fight you to the end, so get ready for the show.

  1. Sharpen your hooks. Stripers have very tough mouths. If you sharpen your hooks regularly, you are more likely to hook them and keep them.
  2. Use big flies. Striped bass are big fish so they are going to be looking for big food. These are harder to cast so it may take some practice. You can also alternate with some smaller flies to see what you will get.
  3. Fish at dawn. Dawn is probably the best time for striped bass fly fishing. You can also try dusk or at night, but dawn is probably the best. Your chances of hooking a striper are always best when the light is low.
  4. Fish during the fall. Striped bass, like other large fish are feeding like mad during the fall to fatten up for the winter. Your chances of a big one are better this time of year.
  5. Practice, Practice. The better fisherman you are the better your chances of catching that striped bass. This includes not only your casting technique, but also your knowledge of fish. If you have a sense of where they are going to be you will know where to put your fly.
  6. Check your knots. This may seem mundane, but it is a useful fly fishing tip. If you don't have a good knot, you may take the change of losing that big one you have always been searching for.
