Sucralose Dangers

Learn the dangers of sucralose to determine if you should use a sugar substitute in your diet. Like many sugar substitutes, sucralose has been associated with health problems. Sucralose is rated by the FDA as 98 percent safe but contains a substance called choline known to cause cancer. Surcralose contains at least four compounds associated with cancer and reproductive problems. Another name for sucralose is Splenda, which is 600 times sweeter than sugar. However, Splenda has zero calories, so this is plus to those that diet.

  1. Chemical alteration of sugar. Sucralose is made by chemically altering sugar where chlorine atoms are added. This process makes chlorinated sugar or chlorcarbon. Chlorocarbons are poisonous substances often used in bleach, disinfectants and insecticides.
  2. FDA pre-testing. Sucralose was found in tests to have some toxicity but was approved by the FDA for use in the United States. However, sucralose has not been tested enough to determine long-term health effects. Use caution when using products that have not been tested thoroughly.
  3. Side effects. People have reported side effects from using sucralose: dizziness, numbness, diarrhea, muscles aches, headaches and stomach pain. About 11 to 27 percent of the substance is absorbed by the body. Sucralose is used in many food items like baked goods and beverages, so check labels when buying. Sucralose effect absorption of medication. This means that people that take prescription drugs do not get the full benefit of the medication.
  4. Marketed as sugar but isn't. Sucralose is marketed as sugar but it's not. It was discovered when trying to make an new insectcide. This product contains some substances considered to be bad for your health.
  5. Surcalose contains two more ingredients: dextrose and malodextrin. These ingredients increase bulk and carbohydrates. You need more sucralose to get the sweetening effect of sugar. Consuming more than one cup per day can increase carbohydrates in your diet. This is not good for people watching their weight or people with diabetes. Consumers often gain weight with this sugar substitute.
