  1. Start by walking in the water. If you’re not a swimmer and it’s been a while since you’ve been on an exercise program, get in the water and start walking laps. This will build up some key muscle groups needed for swimming and get you used to the feeling of the water.
  2. Add some arm strokes. Adding arm strikes as you walk through the water will help you learn the proper technique for swimming. When you’re ready, lift your legs and move through the water using small kicks and long arm strokes.
  3. Learn the proper swimming technique. To really get the benefits of a swimming exercise program, you will need to learn proper swimming form and technique. Rotate your shoulders and body with each stroke as you swim through the water. Longer strokes will actually help you move faster. Keep your head tilted up just a little and move your legs sparingly.

However, your muscles need oxygen more during periods of exercise and you’ll get in better shape faster if you breathe properly.

However, when you have issues like these, you’re the perfect person to start swimming for exercise. The water cuts way back on resistance and swimming can actually be a relief or even a cure for many health problems.
