There are four main symptoms of irritable bowel that many people suffer from. Those common symptoms of irritable bowel include abdominal pain or discomfort, a feeling of being bloated or having flatulence, loss of appetite and alternating constipation and diarrhea. Whether the patient suffers from one or more of these symptoms, medical advice will be necessary to help relieve the discomfort and to control the disease.

  1. Abdominal pain or discomfort- this symptom of irritable bowel is due the fact that the person may be suffering from constipation or diarrhea. These two symptoms may alternate throughout the person's bout with irritable bowel. One moment the person may have diarrhea and then a few hours later that person will be constipated. Either symptom of irritable bowel will create the pain or discomfort.
  2. Diarrhea or constipation- According to the Mayo Clinic, diarrhea and or constipation in relation to irritable bowel, can be a chronic medical condition. Irritable bowel affects the lower intestine and is very uncomfortable alone but when added to the other symptoms of irritable bowel, either of these can and will make the medical condition even more difficult to handle.
  3.  Bloating or flatulence- another main symptom of irritable bowel is either bloating or flatulence, which is a passage of gas through the rectum, and is very uncomfortable. According to the Wrong Diagnosis website, the average person has flatulence approximately 14 to 23 times daily. More than this may be concern for the person suffering from irritable bowel.
  4. Loss of appetite- When someone is inflicted with irritable bowel, a loss of appetite will be obvious. Since the abdominal area is already uncomfortable, that person is hesitant to eat. By eating, the person adds to the discomfort or pain already being felt.
