Knowing the symptoms of sex addiction can help you to get if you need it. Sex addiction is a disorder that includes compulsive sexual thoughts and acting out on sexual impulses. Those with sex addiction may feel their life is spinning out of control as it affects all areas of their life. There are some symptoms that can indicate a possibility of sex addiction.
- Loss of control. Not being able to control the impulse to engage in sexual behavior is one of the main signs of sex addiction.
- Severe consequences. A sexual addict will experience significant consequences as a result of out-of-control sexual behavior. The continual pursuit of sex in spite of health risks, broken relationships, or legal consequences can be a sign of sexual addiction.
- Preoccupation with sex. Constantly thinking about sex even when it interrupts other parts of your life.
- Increase in sex. Engaging in more sex often and with multiple or anonymous partners.
- Not being able to limit sexual activity. Making attempts to stop excessive sexual activity are not successful even though you want to stop.
- Excessive time spent on sex. The amount of time spent viewing pornography, masturbating, looking for sexual partners online or chatting about sex is extreme.
- Other areas of life are neglected. Work, school, or relationships suffer because of the time and attention given to sexual activities.
- Escalation of sexual experiences. Including more partners to heighten the effect, or increasing the frequency of sex can be a red flag.
- Anger or irritability. A sex addict may feel irritable or even angry when they are not able to satisfy their craving for their preferred sexual activity.
- Suicidal thoughts or depression. Sex addicts may consider suicide or suffer from severe depression.
