Tallest Roller Coasters In The World
The tallest roller coasters in the world include many in the United States as well as many in other countries such as Australia and Japan. While the United States is home to the three tallest roller coasters in the world, they cannot claim to have the fastest roller coaster in the world. That title is held by the Formula Rossa at Ferrari World in the United Arab Emirates.
- Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure - Standing at 456 feet tall, the Kingda Ka is the tallest roller coaster in the world. This steel coaster opened on May 21, 2005, at the Six Flags Great Adventure park in Jackson, New Jersey.
- Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point - Formerly the tallest roller coaster in the world, the Top Thrill Dragster is located inside the Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio. The 420-foot steel coaster held the record for its height for two years, between May 2003 and May 2005.
- Superman: Escape from Krypton at Six Flags Magic Mountain - As one of the oldest thrill rides on the list of tallest coasters in the world, Superman: Escape from Krypton at Six Flags Magic Mountain sits at 415 feet tall. This ride opened in 1997 at the theme park in Valencia, California.
- Tower of Terror II at Dreamworld - Entering the list as the tallest roller coaster in the world outside of the United States, the Tower of Terror II at Dreamworld is located in Coomera, Queenland, Australia. In operation since 1997, this steel coaster sits at 377 feet, four inches tall.
- Steel Dragon 2000 at Nagashima Spa Land - Reaching 318 feet, the Steel Dragon 2000 is the tallest roller coaster in Asia and the fifth-tallest roller coaster in the world. This attraction at Nagashima Spa Land in Nagashima, Kuwana, Mie, Japan, also features a nearly 307-foot drop and can reach speeds of 95 miles per hour.
- Millennium Force at Cedar Point - Another steel roller coaster at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, the Millennium Force opened at the dawn of the new millenium, in May of 2000. This ride sends passengers down at an 80-degree angle, reaching speeds of 93 miles per hour with a height of 310 feet.
- Intimidator 305 at Kings Dominion - Featuring a theme of late NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, the Intimidator 305 descends at an 85-degree angle from its peak of 305 feet. The coaster opened at Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia, in April 2010.
- Thunder Dolphin at Tokyo Dome City - In the last of the tallest steel roller coasters in the world, the Thunder Dolphin comes in at 262 feet, six inches. The 90-second ride holds 24 riders per train and operates at Tokyo Dome City in Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan.
- Son Of Beast at Kings Island - Though much shorter than steel rides on the list of the tallest roller coasters in the world, the Son of Beast is the tallest wooden roller coaster in the world. This ride, at Kings Island in Kings Mills, Ohio, reaches a total height of 218 feet.
- Colossos at Heide-Park Soltau - As the shortest of the tallest roller coasters in the world, the Colossos is the second-tallest wooden coaster. At 196 feet, 10 inches, Colossos calls the Heide-Park Soltau home in Soltau, Lower Saxony, Germany.
