Texas Drivers License Renewal Online

Save time by doing your Texas drivers license renewal online. The Texas Department of Public Safety lets you renew your drivers license up to a year early online. It helps you avoid the long lines that the offices often have if you choose to visit your local DMV. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to get your Texas drivers license renewed online.

To complete your drivers license renewal online, you will need to have a:

  • current driver license or valid identification card
  • credit card or acceptable debit card with the MasterCard, Visa, American Express or Discover logo
  • Social Security Card
  1. Log into the Texas Department of Public Safety website: Click on the drop-down menu for renewals and changes until you find renew online. Select that option for renew drivers license. It will direct you to a second page.
  2. Meet the requirements: Once you arrive to the second page, make sure to double check your required items listed above. Get these items out because you will need to refer to them for information. Afterward, click on the "yes" icon to be taken to the next page. If you do not have all three items or do not understand exactly what you need, click on the "more info" link.
  3. Review faqs: The third page offers answers to any questions you may have about your Texas license. You can also re-check your eligibility for renewing a drivers license online. After completing this step, click on continue.
  4. Login: This page requests certain information found on your drivers license. You need to type in your drivers license number, audit number, date of birth and last four digits of Social Security Number. All of this information is found on the front of the license. Select continue when you have finished. The system automatically checks for any discrepancies on your license. It also checks to see if you are eligible to apply online.
  5. Choose service: You will need to select the service you wish to complete in this section. Choose renew online and continue to next page. The next page requests other information regarding voter's registeration and organ donations. Choose what options you want and click continue.
  6. Select payment option: You need to choose which type of credit card you want to use online. Put in your card number, expiration date and security card number. This number is on the back of the card. Click continue.
  7. Payment confirmation: You will receive a payment confirmation. Keep this for your records showing you have paid and renewed your Texas drivers license online. Print it off or save a copy on your computer.

The renewed Texas drivers license will arrive in the mail. It may take several weeks to receive. People under eighteen cannot apply online. If your license is suspended or expired, you must also reapply in person. Certain fees may apply.
