If you are looking to get back into shape or start training for a goal, you should consider tips for beginning a running program. It will take some time to get into full gear and you don't want to overdo anything, sacrificing your health or potential progress in the program. Here are some tips for beginning a running program that you should keep in mind.

  1. Consult your doctor. Any major changes in your exercise routine should be cleared with your doctor, especially if you have medical conditions that would warrant this approach. Ask your doctor about how this may affect your medications, where applicable.
  2. Begin a diet. When you begin a running program, you should also begin - or already have in place - a dieting program. A running program will demand a lot from your body. It is essential to eat nutritiously in order to get the most out of your training/fitness goals.
  3. Establish a schedule. In order to get a routine going and keep it steady over the long haul, develop a schedule for your running program. Be realistic. Set the times that you are willing to run and keep in mind how you will be doing this, whether you're running with a partner, at a gym, or on your treadmill at home.
  4. Set goals. Having goals is an important aspect of any type of training. For your running program, set some goals that you would like to accomplish. If you want to run a certain number of miles or achieve another type of training goal, write it down. Having something to work towards will help you focus.
  5. Add variety. When you get into your running program don't get sucked into why many don't stay with their program. The all-too-familiar training method that you use to run can get old. Switch things up by running at the local park or finding a friend to run with you if things get stale - these can help you stay consistent to your program.
