Looking for tips for detecting counterfeit bills? Unfortunately, there are many scam artists out there that will try to use counterfeit bills to purchase products and/or services. If you do not know how to detect counterfeit bills, you will be costing yourself money by accepting counterfeit bills that your bank will not accept.

  1. Paper. If you look at a genuine bill, you will notice that there are very small red and blue fibers that are embedded throughout the bill. People who are making counterfeit bills will try to reproduce the red and blue fibers. However, if you compare a genuine bill to a counterfeit bill, you will be able to tell that the red and blue fibers are not actually embedded on the counterfeit bill.
  2. Portrait. All genuine bills contain the portrait of a president. The portrait will be lifelike and will pop out from the background. On counterfeit bills, the portrait will be flat and may blend in with the background. The portrait on a genuine bill should look almost as if it were a 3D image.
  3. Serial Numbers. Checking the serial numbers on a bill are a fantastic way to detect counterfeit bills. The serial numbers on a genuine bill will be evenly spaced. The color of the serial numbers on a genuine bill will be the same color as the Treasury seal. On counterfeit bills, the serial numbers may not be evenly spaced or they may be printed in a color that is different from the Treasury seal.

Just remember, scrutinize every bill that comes into your hands! Recognizing a counterfeit bill is all in the details.
