Looking for tips for docking a boat? Docking a boat may seem like a difficult task if you are beginner, but it should be easy once you gain some experience. Always be sure to exercise extreme caution when you are docking a boat in rain or high winds.

  1. Angles. You should always try to come in at an angle when you are docking a boat. This isn't always possible, especially when you are docking in a tight position, but if there is enough room for you to come in at an angle, do it. You will be reducing your chances of scraping your boat against the dock by coming in at an angle.
  2. Slow Speed. When docking a boat, you should have your boat running at an idle speed. If you feel that your idle speed is too fast to dock your boat, you will need to coast. However, you will need to be careful when coasting, because you will lose a good portion of your ability to steer your boat. If your boat begins to drift, go into neutral gear and gently move your forward gear up to get your boat back on course.
  3. Momentum. As you are approaching the dock, you will need to begin to turn your boat towards the dock. To successfully dock your boat, you will need to slow down as you are beginning your turn towards the dock. When you are slowing down for docking a boat, your boat may become hard to steer. One thing that you need to keep in mind when docking a boat is that once your boat begins to turn, it will continue to turn due to momentum. If you are having trouble steering your boat, use the momentum that you have to dock your boat.
