Tips For Using Barefoot Running Shoes

You might think that running sneakers are the most important piece of gear for a serious runner. But in fact, new research at Harvard University shows that might not be the case. In fact, the scientists found that running barefoot, or in minimal footwear, may actually be easier on the feet than running shoes. The reason? Runners wearing sneakers land on their heel, which can cause damage to the foot, while runners who do not have shoes on tend to land on the toes or the balls of their feet, which is a safer impact. Want to try out barefoot running? Use these helpful tips.

  1. Start slowly. Even if you are an experienced runner, barefoot running uses different muscle groups, so the transition from shoes to no shoes should be made gradually.
  2. Run on a safe surface. It's important that you are running on a path or trail where your feet will not be injured by twigs, glass, or other debris.
  3. Keep your eyes open. Even on a clean surface, make sure to watch for debris that may injure your feet.
  4. Try barefoot running shoes. This type of footwear mimics the effect of running without shoes, while providing some protection for your feet.
  5. Wear sunscreen. Deadly skin cancer can develop on the feet if not protected.
  6. If you are diabetic, running barefoot is not for you. Foot injury can be quite serious in diabetic patients.
  7. Keep your feet clean. Wash your feet carefully before and after running barefoot to avoid infection.
  8. Use common sense. Listen to your feet. If you are in pain after running, take a break.
  9. Consult your physician. Before beginning any exercise plan, you should talk to your doctor to make sure it's right for you.
