Every sports fan wants to believe that the game that they love is clear of controversy and scandal. Unfortunately, almost every facet of sport has been clouded by the actions of a few, which has harmed the legacy of the many in the game.
Drugs, sex, and bungs have each become embroiled in various sports and athletes have looked to confirm their achievements by taking banned substances. Some have even tarnished their reputations by making sure they were defeated in return for a quick buck.
But what have been the most controversial moments in sporting history? Here are the top five worst sports controversies and hoaxes.
Ben Johnson’s stupendous victory at the 1988 Seoul Olympics looked set to be labeled one of the greatest sporting moments of all time. However only days later it was revealed he had taken steroids to enhance his performance and he has now become the man most synonymous with drugs use in sports. Right up until Lance Armstrong came along and stole his thunder. Selfish.
Black Sox Scandal
The 1919 World Series was one of the most controversial events in American sporting history. Eight members of the Chicago White Sox team were banned from the sport for life after it was revealed they intentionally lost games against the Cincinnati Reds. All of which was organized by legendary New York gangster, Arnold Rothstein.
One of the greatest cricketers of all time, was banned from the sport for life in 2004, after recordings revealed he had been working in cahoots with an Indian betting syndicate over match-fixing allegations. He later died under mysterious circumstances after his plane crashed whilst he was the only person on board.
The golden boy of cycling. The man who came over testicular cancer, which had spread to his brain and lungs, but still managed to go on and win the Tour de France a record seven times. But then it was revealed he had been committing doping offenses throughout his time on the saddle and has since had his achievements revoked, and is now banned from the sport for the rest of his days.
Italian soccer’s reputation was irretrievably ruined after it was revealed that several of Italy’s top professional teams, including AC Milan, Inter Milan, Lazio, Juventus, and Fiorentina had been involved in match fixing for several years. After being uncovered in 2006, Juventus were relegated down several divisions and lost the championship they had just won.
