Toxic Shock Syndrome Symptoms
Toxic shock syndrome symptoms are important symptoms to be aware of. Unfortunately there isn't an exact known cause for this syndrome. Some of the causes of toxic shock syndrome include staph infection, pneumonia, abscess, skin infections, wound infections, blood infections and bone infections. Regardless of the cause of toxic shock syndrome, here are some important symptoms that you should be on the lookout for:
- Some symptoms will resemble those of the flu. For instance, you will get muscle aches and pains, stomach cramps, a headache and a sore throat. While these symptoms are common with a lot of illnesses, they develop more rapidly with toxic shock syndrome. These symptoms are also more severe with toxic shock syndrome than with other, less serious illnesses.
- Just like when you have the flu, you will develop a fever. Oftentimes this fever will come on suddenly. It will then spike around 102 degrees. While this could be the symptom of numerous illnesses, if any of the other symptoms of toxic shock syndrome are present, you should pay attention to your fever also being a sign of this syndrome.
- You will develop signs of shock. These signs will include low blood pressure and rapid heartbeat. Oftentimes you will become lightheaded, nauseous, restless and confused. You may even faint or vomit.
- The site of the infection will be painful. This is true if a wound or skin injury is involved with toxic shock syndrome. You may even develop a rash that looks somewhat like a sunburn as well. Oftentimes the skin tissue in this area will die early whenever you have toxic shock syndrome. During recovery you may continue to shed skin.
- More than one of your body’s systems will be involved. The most common organs involved with toxic shock syndrome are your lungs and kidneys. You should also know that you will develop a blood infection, which is known as sepsis. This will affect your entire body.
