The most common types of colon cancer are those cancers of the colon that have the highest probability in occurring in the demographic that is at risk. Colon cancer is quite notorious in that it is the fourth most-common type of cancer in the United States, while also being the third leading cause of death in the world among types of cancers. Globally, it causes 655,000 deaths, deaths that can be preventable if you just catch colon cancer early enough when it is at stage 0 or 1.
- Adenocarcinoma. The most common type of colon cancer is adenocarcinoma, simply because it is the type that occurs the most frequently: Nearly all colon cancers start out as adenocarcinomas. These types of colon cancers have two subtypes, signet ring cell and mucinous, and they also account for approximately 90 percent to 95 percent of all colon cancer incidents. However, out of all carcinomas of the gastrointestinal system, colon cancer is the one that has the greatest prognosis.
- Leiomyosarcoma. Leiomyosarcoma is a type of colon cancer that first targets your colon's smooth muscle. Smooth muscle can best be thought of as that muscle which is categorized as involuntary muscle. This muscle can be found all over your body, in places like blood vessels' walls, your intestines, your stomach and even your skin. Metastasizing is a real problem with this type of colon cancer because it has a good chance of spreading to other parts of your body. While this type of colon cancer is rare in that it only accounts for about less than 2 percent of all cases of colon cancer, it is unpredictable and hard to treat with chemotherapy.
- Lymphomas. The best way to define a lymphoma is that it is a malignancy in your lymph system. They are very rare, but unlike other types of colon cancer, they actually begin in your rectum, which is closer in proximity to your anus. The good news if you have a lymphoma is that it is easier to treat than the more common form of colon cancer, which is the carcinoma variety. While this type of colon cancer responds well to chemotherapy, if it gets to be a big size, it must be removed by surgery for best results.
