Many different types of contraceptives come in a variety of colors, flavors and strengths. These contraceptives can be used by both men and women, and can provide a significant amount of protection against sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancies. Some contraceptives provide a high rate of protection, while others only give a slim amount of protection to both partners. There are some types of contraceptives that require a second method of protection to be used along with it. But, both men and women have a variety of choice when it now comes to protecting themselves during sexual relationships.

  1. Condoms. Latex Condoms are a well-known contraceptive that are used by both men and women. They are usually placed on the penis or inside of the vagina to keep the sperm from entering the partner, during sexual intercourse. Condoms are usually inexpensive and can be obtained at any drug store. Condoms are available in many sizes and there are numerous of manufactures that make the product.
  2. Birth Control Pills. There are birth control pills on the market that are available to women. Although, they will not provide any protection against sexually transmitted diseases, they will provide protection against unwanted pregnancies. There are also forms of birth control methods that can be implanted in a woman’s arm or giving in the form of a shot injection every three months. Research is presently underway to create a birth control pill and implant for men.
  3. Lambskin Condoms. Lambskin condoms are used to give individuals a more natural feeling during sexual intercourse. Lambskin condoms are also used in place of latex for individuals, who may have an allergic reaction to latex condoms. Lambskin condoms do not provide the same protection as latex condoms in that there are holes in the condoms, which sperm can pass through.
  4. Vasectomy. A vasectomy is a permanent contraceptive alternative that is only used in men. This method does require going to a health care provider and having a surgical procedure done. The healing process is usually quite easy and within several weeks individuals can resume a healthy and normal sex life.
  5. Contraceptive Foams and Gels. These forms of contraceptives can be used by inserting inside of a woman’s vagina. The foam and gel comes in a variety of odors and flavors. The main ingredient used in these contraceptives is Nonoxynol 9. The method is used to keep the sperm from reaching a woman’s egg and fertilizing it. This method is not highly effective and usually requires another form of contraceptive used along with it, usually a condom. This method does not protect individuals from sexually transmitted diseases.
  6. Sponge. The sponge is a device made of polyurethane and it contains spermicide which it can be purchased at any drug store. The sponge is put up high into the vagina to cover the cervix.

All of these contraceptives can provide some form of protection if used correctly. Contraceptives can be discussed with your health care provider to choose what form may be most effective for you. There are many health clinics that provide health care and sexually transmitted disease checks. Some of these organizations will also provide free contraceptives to individuals.
