This list of types of STDs might be the only thing to convince you not to have too much sex with too many different people, as they range from irritating to deadly in nature. To avoid sexually transmitted diseases at all cost, abstain from sexual intercourse; however, the next best thing is find a long-term mutually monogamous partner, or to always use a latex condom. Not only by an exchange of bodily fluid but through syringes and needles. Surest way is to abstain from sexual activity or be in a long-term mutually monogamous partner. The use of latex condoms that also greatly reduce the risk of transmission.

  1. Genital Herpes. This virus is caused by the herpes viruses type 1 and type 2, though most are caused by the latter. These unfortunate symptoms surface as small but painful blisters. Outbreaks can last for weeks or months and can be controlled with medication. There is no cure for herpes.
  2. HIV and AIDS. Human immunodeficiency virus, which kills cells that fight off infection and disease, will eventually lead to the deadly to acquired immunodeficiency virus (AIDS), which will deteriorate the immune system, making one susceptible from getting killed by a simple cold or flu. There is no cure.
  3. Genital Warts. This STD is caused by the human papillomavirus, an umbrella classification for numerous strains of the virus. Warts appear on the vulva, vagina, anus, cervix, penis and scrotum and are soft and flesh colored.
  4. Hepatitis B. This is  a virus that attacks the liver and even cause liver cancer. This condition is capable of being passed from mother to child. There are two types-Acute and Chronic. The latter will linger in the body if isn’t treated.
  5. Gonorrhea. This STD is caused by a bacteria in the moist, heated areas of male and female reproductive area, especially the urethra in men and the uterus and cervix of women. It is the highest reported sexual disease among teenagers and young adults. If left untreated it can cause infertility to both sexes and spread to the blood and joints,
  6. Chlamydia. This bacterial condition is the most sexually transmitted disease in the United States. It is caused by a bacteria ‘Chlamydia trachomatis’, which can damage a female reproductive organs and cause pain and swelling of the testicles in men.
  7. Thrush. Though technically not an STD, a partner with thrush, or a yeast infection in the genital area, can be transmitted through sexual exchange. Though it appears less frequently in men, symptoms of thrush are swelling, irritation and discharge from the penis.
  8. Syphilis. This is transmitted by the a bacteria called ‘Treponema pallidum’.and exhibits symptoms often hard to tell apart from other STDs. It is characterized by rashes and sores in early stages and can eventually cause mental illness, blindness and death.
  9. Trichomoniasis. This is a common sexually transmitted disease with symptoms that are more common in women but can be contract it from men in some instances. It is caused by a parasite named ‘Trichomonas vaginalis’ and can effect the urethra in men as well as women.
  10. Pubic lice. This is one of the more easily treatable STDs, though it can also be spread on toilet seats, or sharing bedding or clothing with an infected person as well. Symptoms are intense itching and sores from bites. These can be rid of with prescription lotion or shampoo.
