Molluscum Contagiosum is a skin infection which affects thousands of people each year. This unappealing virus is seen more in adolescents than adults. However, the condition does appear in adults as well. Molluscum appears in bumps (papules), which are hard to the touch and do not cause any pain. The appearance of molluscum in an adult’s genital area is the sign of a sexually transmitted disease. This disease is easily spread by direct contact from infected persons. Many individuals choose to seek out home remedies to treat molluscum. Some find relief after using a apple cider treatment, which has shown to be more effective in children. Before using any home remedies to treat molluscum contagiosum; it is advised that individuals consult with their health care provider for proper diagnosis, and to discuss their choice of treatment.
- Use apple cider vinegar or white vinegar. Many individuals find apple cider vinegar to work better; it brings the bumps to a head quicker. White vinegar provides a more lighter smell; it keeps individuals with molluscum from smelling like they have been drenched in vinegar. Both are known to be very effective ways to treat molluscum.
- Warm vinegar baths will bring papules to a head. Soaking in warm vinegar, diluted with water can help bring the papules to a head and dry them out. It is recommended diluting the vinegar with water to avoid a burning sensation around the bumps area. It is advised to use a cup of salt, and a bottle of water to a full amount of normal bath water. The salt is used to draw out the infection in the papules, after the water opens up the pores on the skin, the vinegar will then kill the virus.
- Apply vinegar to cotton balls. Vinegar can be used on cotton balls and applied directly to the papules; this is used to draw out the infection in each bump. Saturate each cotton ball in vinegar and apply to the papule; cover each with a bandaid, and allow to remain over night. If applied during the day the cotton balls can be removed and a new one applied. This method is used to draw each papule to a head.
- Try drinking apple cider vinegar. It has been suggested that drinking 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar diluted with water, will bring the body back into a more alkaline state, which will help fight off the outbreak of molluscum.
