Water Polo Shooting Drills For Beginners
Since the game of water polo is won by a team shooting the most goals, every team should take some time to practice water polo shooting drills for beginners. These drills are great for beginners to learn the basics with shooting the winning goal, while also helping more advance players remember the fundamentals of a good shot.
- Whistle Shots - For whistle shots, line up players to one side of the goal, one behind the other. On a diagonal, a player will dribble the ball towards the goal, and on the sound of the whistle will shoot as quickly as possible into the goal. After the shot, the player needs to shoot to the other side of the goal and receive the ball from the goalie. This helps players learn to shoot quickly from all angles as the coach will blow the whistle at different times to perfect all angles of shots.
- Triangle Shooting - For triangle shooting, place one player to the right and to the left of the goal. Line the rest of the players in a line in front of the center of the goal. Start by having the front player in the line with the ball pass to either the player to the right or the left of the goal, then have that player pass the ball to the player across from them, and have them take a shot into the goal. Once the shot has been done, rotate the players so the front of the line moves to the position to the right of the goal, the person to the right of the goal moves to the left of the goal, and the player to the left of the goal moves to the back of the line. This drill not only helps players learn to pass, but practice shooting.
- Outside Shooting - For outside shooting, place players in two lines about six meters away from the goal, each line at each goal post. In the center, about two meters away from the goal, have those two players with their arms up in a defensive move. The front two players in the line will practice passing the ball back and forth until one tries to shoot through the two defensive players to make a goal. This not only helps passing, but shooting through defensive players.
