Water Polo Training Drills For Beginners

Looking to learn some water polo training drills for beginners? For water polo beginners, training drills are important to help them learn the game's basic moves and techniques. Any beginner in any sport needs to be sure to level up their endurance and their mastery of specific skills, in order for you to do that, here are some water polo training drills for beginners:

  1. The Eggbeater-Frog Kick Drill: The eggbeater is an important swimming technique for water polo players to learn because it is the one kick that you use the most in drills and plays. The frog kick is equally important. In this drill, you have to first line up at one side or end of the pool. Place both hands on your head and kick to the other side using the eggbeater, alternating with the frog kick. Practice going forward, side-ward, and backward. Keep working at these kicks and soon your team will have a new name for you: Flipper.
  2. The Double Bobbing Drill: Double bobbling is a fundamental exercise in water polo as it enables you to quicken and strengthen your breathing. One thing you do not want to do is run out of puff during a critical stage in the game. For this drill, you need to form part of a pair in deep water, face each other and hold both hands in a finger grip. One player submerges whilst maintaining a straight arms position, descending to their partner's knees. The submerged player then resurfaces for breathing whilst pulling their partner under water. Both players should repeat this procedure, gradually increasing the pace to make the breathing more challenging.
  3. The Shoulder Wrestle Drill: The shoulder wrestle is an excellent drill for beginners if you want to condition your back and stomach muscles. Again, this training drill requires a pair. You begin by placing your hands upon each other's shoulders, keeping your elbows straight. The next step is to try to submerge each other by pressing down upon the shoulders. The object of this challenge is to cause your partner to duck before they do the same to you. This drill is ideally suited for use as an elimination contest.
  4. The Pressure Passing Drill: Pressure passing requires four partners, divided into pairs. Each pair should contain an offensive and a defensive player. The pairs situate themselves at a distance of about 4-6 meters away from each other. The offensive player of one of the pairs begins with possession of the ball. The goal for the offensive player is to pass the ball through to the other pair's opposite number. Meanwhile, the defensive players are charged with the task of blocking the pass. This drill works well in developing both offensive and defensive technique.
  5. The Wall Push Off Drill: This beginner's drill helps to develop and strengthen the leg muscles as well as measuring the effectiveness of the kick. All the participants in this exercise line up on one end of the pool, then start kicking with arms straight and hands against the wall or holding the gutter. Bend your elbows and push off while kicking until you reach the wall opposite. Keep going. This water polo training drill also helps beginners with their stamina. The most important thing to remember is that you keep going at it, keep training, keep doing your drills and you will be a pro in no time.
