What Is Aerobic Exercise?

Aerobic exercise is one of the best ways to burn calories, lose weight and improve cardiovascular health, but exactly what is aerobic exercise? The literal meaning of aerobic is “with oxygen.” In aerobic exercise, oxygen comes into play when the body begins to use more of it during exercise.

To qualify as an aerobic exercise, the exercise must continuously use a large muscle group and raise your heart rate to 60 to 80 percent of your personal maximum. Aerobic exercise does not have to be strenuous. It is generally recommended to keep the intensity at a level that makes it possible for you to talk during your workout. This keeps the intensity at a level that can be sustained long-term.

During aerobic exercise, the heart and lungs are conditioned by the additional oxygen. The increased oxygen enables better oxygen usage by the heart. During a prolonged workout, calories are burned, making it easier to shed fat. Aerobic exercise is one facet of a healthy lifestyle, along with a balanced diet. Doing aerobic activities at least three times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes is an often-recommended aerobic target.

Aerobic exercise routines can include jogging, swift walking or using a stair stepper, treadmill or other exercise machines. There are also indoor, repetitive exercise routines that don’t use a machine. Not everyone is healthy enough to engage in aerobic exercise. Heart conditions and other health problems may make it too dangerous to engage in prolonged exercise. If you aren’t sure if you can begin doing aerobic activities, consult your doctor.
