If you are cross training for another sport, or if you are considering a fitness program for the first time, you might be asking yourself "what benefits does a cross trainer Elliptical have?" Learn about the benefits of the Elliptical Machine as a cross trainer below:

  1. Low-Impact exercise. The Elliptical Machine is much more forgiving on your joints than a treadmill (for example). The Elliptical is a great way to stay in shape if you have an injury. Also, if or you are significantly overweight and you are just beginning a fitness program, it is better to start with an Elliptical Machine before moving to an exercise where you will have to bear your entire body weight. Note: The Elliptical Machine is not an "impact-free" cross trainer (like the pool), you will still be putting some weight on your joints. If you have sustained an injury which does not allow you to bear weight on it, proceed with caution when using the Elliptical.
  2. Total body workout. Elliptical Machines force you to use your legs and your arms, which results in maximum calorie burning. Estimates of how many calories can be burned range anywhere from 600 to 1000 calories per hour (depending on body weight and other factors).
  3. Maintain fitness. If you become injured during Soccer or Track for example, your coach will probably recommend that you train on an Elliptical. When asked if the Elliptical provides the same benefits as running, legendary track and field coach, Tom Heinonen responded, "I have seen athletes come out completely ripped, without loosing any cardiovascular fitness. The only drawback is that because it is low impact, the Elliptical, like other low-impact exercises doesn't develop the muscles that stabilize you during running or other sports."
