If you are having a medical procedure done, your doctor may have ordered you to be on a clear liquid diet, which may leave you wondering, what is a clear liquid diet? A clear liquid diet is just as it sounds. It consists of consuming clear liquids that leave no undigested residue in the digestive tract. A clear liquid diet is often used prior to medical procedures to ensure the digestive tract is empty. While these diets are effective, they can not be maintained for a prolonged period of time because they do not provide the body with adequate nutrition.

  1. A clear liquid diet is commonly used prior to certain medical procedures, tests or surgeries, but can also be used for people with certain digestive complications. When a clear liquid diet is used prior to medical procedures and surgeries, it is done so the digestive tract is completely empty. When a liquid diet is used for those with digestive complications, it is only a short term diet to allow the digestive system to return to normal. A clear liquid diet is sometimes recommended after certain surgeries as well.
  2. A clear liquid diet consists of foods and beverages that are used to maintain hydration and to balance electrolyte levels. Foods and beverages included within the clear liquid diet consist of plain water, fruit juices that contain no pulp and broth. Sometimes clear sodas or sports drinks can be included in the diet as well. Plain gelatin, certain ice pops and plain tea are also used during a clear liquid diet.

It is important a clear liquid diet is not used for a prolonged period of time because it does not provide the body with the vital nutrients it needs to continue functioning properly. If a clear liquid diet is used for a prolonged period of time, it is common for excessive weight loss to occur, as well as malnutrition.
